Diego Kohl

Classical & Jazz Piano / Bass / Guitar & Guitarron

Diego Kohl was Born in Ajijic Mexico, a small lakeside town where he spent his childhood learning to play the guitar and learning to sing in Spanish. At age 10 Diego and his family moved to Canada.

“In Canada I became immersed in North American Music, Jazz, boogie woogie piano and blues guitar. At age fourteen I knew that I wanted to be a musician”. He has never looked back since he has been studying and playing music for more than 25 years.

Diego is an Alumni from the Music Department at Vancouver Community College (VCC) where he majored in classical piano and minored in Jazz guitar and received his Bachelor’s degree in Music-Classical piano. He currently teaches Classical and Jazz Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Guitarron.

Diego performs regularly in the lower mainland with different bands and great musicians. One of his highlights as a jazz pianist was performing with the Dal Richards Orquesta.

He currently directs and plays piano with his own Latin Orquesta, “Orquesta Tabasko”. “Orquesta Tabasko has been a dream come true for me, I love playing the classic Latin dance music; Mambo, Son, Rumba, Cha-cha, Salsa, Cumbia, and Merengue. It’s such lively and passionate music; I never get tired of playing these styles. There is just so much variety in the music that I am forever intrigued”.

Another style of music that Diego has been close to his heart going back to his childhood in Mexico is Mariachi music. Like Salsa it is also very versatile. In the Mariachi umbrella there are also several different styles of wonderful music.

“Nothing takes me back to my Mexican roots quite like Mariachi music, I have been a member of Mariachi Los Dorados since 2004 – Canada’s Premier Mariachi based in Vancouver BC”.
